These fire chiefs were not only popular among the rank and file members who served under their commands but also were highly respected by fire chiefs and firefighters from throughout Rhode Island. René spent 39 years in the fire service, 25 years as chief while his father Robert served as both deputy chief and was appointed chief in 1977.
